Light pollution affects over 90% of the global population. More then half the global population experience light pollution so severe that only a hand full of stars are visible. I am fortunate enough to live in western Colorado and have easy access to some of the darkest skies in the world. The high elevations, low humidity and generally clear skies of Colorado and Utah provide near pristine starry sky conditions.
Learn how to photograph the Milky Way, nebulae and the stars
In the dark, dry, clear high elevation skies, the faintest of objects become visible. Regardless of what camera equipment you use, outside of a point and shoot, an interchangeable lens style camera with manual controls is a must. You'll come away with some beautiful images of our galaxy. Images that you can sit and stare at with awe knowing that you just photographed billions of stars and nebulae

The best time to photograph the Milky Way and stars is during new moon, but can still be experienced in the evening one week prior to new moon and in the mornings up to one week after new moon

Camera Equipment
This workshop requires that you have a DLSR (or Mirrorless) camera which allows for manual settings of Aperture, Exposure Duration and ISO. The camera should support interchangeable lenses - FAST (F2.8 or faster) and WIDE (28MM or wider) are best for nighttime photography (lenses can be rented on-line at www.borrowlenses.com). You will also need a tripod. You can also bring a laptop (for processing your images). Once you've registered, you will receive a preparation guide and a list of useful apps for night photography.

What's the Maximum number of attendees?
A total of 3 students may participate. Limiting class
sizes allows me to provide you with the best learning environment possible.
Who is this for?
Intermediate to advanced
It's designed for both amateur and professional photographers. However, participants should have a working understanding of their cameras’ settings, Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, and a basic understanding of file organization.
What happens if we experience inclement weather
Ultimately, weather is an uncontrollable factor with night sky photography. Regardless of the conditions we will stay out and shoot as long as it is safe to do so. we may need to be flexible and shoot different locations if the weather allows for it. Clouds play a significant role while capturing the night sky. However, even during completely overcast conditions, I promise you will come away with beautiful images, knowledge, and capabilities of capturing the night sky.
What about them refunds
Unfortunately, I am unable to give refunds due to unforeseen weather events during our workshop. However, I will make all reasonable efforts to accommodate your schedule and needs. For more info regarding refunds and/or rescheduling, please read our Refunds and Cancellations Policy.
Can I bring family and friends if they are not shooting
As a rule. NO, I'd rather you not bring friends unless it is your spouse. I feel that bringing friends could interfere with the learning experience. If the friend is not interested in photography or astronomy in any form it won't be enjoyable for them. Yet if they are interested they can always sign up for the workshop like everyone else
I allow under 18 to attend and in that case a parent MUST be present at all times
What's the minimum age to attend
to experience the outdoors and night skies before it is too late, and also continue the art of photography. I will gladly accept people as young as 12 to participate, but a parent MUST be present at all times
